Unpacking Units- Creating Alignment & Focusing on Student Learning

Sometimes in Elementary Schools, especially with large grade level teams, we see a false sense of alignment around our curriculum.  We see teachers across the team readying themselves for a Fiction Reading Unit on Characters, thinking they are on the same page as their teammates. They have discussed favorite learning activities, resources for book clubs, and even have a document where they can find teaching points to guide them. But as the unit progresses and comes to a close, they realize they have ended up in different places. Some have put a heavy influence on character life lessons, while others spent more time on plot and predictions, not really hitting life lessons. Some focused heavily on thinking about character change, while others skipped that and mostly made inferences on character traits.
